“Be courageous” has been my mantra for 2017. Tired of letting worry and self-doubt stand in my way, I made a commitment on January 1 to be brave and daring this year. It has been difficult and scary, yet I’ve found a new level of growth as I’ve chosen courage, day after day. Courage is a decision, and in my case, it takes constant intention and energy. I have quotes scribbled in my planner and on sticky notes in my office. I talk to myself on a daily basis, telling myself to go, jump, and do what I’m afraid of.
So many of us want to make changes, to stretch for our dreams, yet we want to stay comfortable in the process. But the truth is, growth and change cannot happen without discomfort. It’s not possible. We’ve got to be willing to face our fears and move in the presence of uncertainty, no matter how uncomfortable it is. Here are seven quotes about courage to pump you up and remind you that you can be afraid and still move forward.
“You can choose courage, or you can choose comfort, but you cannot choose both.” Brene Brown
“Great people do things before they’re ready. They do things before they know they can do it.” Amy Poehler
“Fear is a reaction. Courage is a decision.” Winston Churchill
“The true meaning of courage is to be afraid, and then, with your knees knocking and your heart racing, to step out anyway—even when that step makes sense to nobody but you. I know that’s not easy. But making a bold move is the only way to truly advance toward the grandest vision the universe has for you.” Oprah Winfrey
“Courage is like a muscle. We strengthen it with use.” Ruth Gordon
“Be messy and complicated and afraid and show up anyways.” Glennon Doyle Melton
“You must do the things you think you cannot do.” Eleanor Roosevelt
