Trying to Change but Feeling Stuck? Here’s How to Fix That.

Trying to Change but Feeling Stuck? Here’s How to Fix That.

Are you trying to change something in your life? If so, I’ve got something you need to hear.

But first, a quick backstory.  When I was a kid, my mom had all sorts of witty catchphrases and wise mantras. She was a teacher; she couldn’t help herself. As a teenager, I often rolled my eyes at these phrases. What do moms know anyway? (Ha, turns out, a whole lot!) It’s incredible how many of her wise sayings have stuck with me, well into adulthood. I even use a few in my work with clients. So while my thirteen year old self would hate to admit it, my mom knew what she was talking about.

One of my mom’s mantras that stuck around the longest was about trying to change. I heard it over and over as a kid.

If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always gotten.

Read that again, a little slower.   If you always do…what you’ve always done…you’ll always get…what you’ve always gotten.

Isn’t that the truth? So many of us want to see change in our lives, yet we’re glued to what we know, what is familiar, and what is comfortable. We want different results, but we aren’t willing to do anything different.

We want to get in shape, but we aren’t willing to try a new form or exercise or meet with a dietician.  We continue with how we’ve been doing things, wondering why we aren’t seeing progress. We want to develop a better support system, but we don’t make the first move and initiate connections. We aren’t willing to invite a neighbor over or extend an invitation to the new girl at work. We want to be more patient with our families, but we don’t want to spend ten minutes a day meditating.  We just keep trying the same old strategies.

Y’all, this doesn’t work. We have to try something new and different, something we’ve never ever done before.

I want you to live the healthy and meaningful life you deserve.  That change you’ve been dreaming of?  That thing you’ve been thinking about doing for the past several months?  You can do it!  But I have to ask you, what are you going to do different to make that happen?  Because you can’t keep doing the same thing and expect different results.

If you want something different in your life, then you are going to have to do something different. You’re going to have to break a habit, get outside of your comfort zone, and try something new. It’s hard and scary and tough, but you can do it.  I know it.

What change do you want to make in your life, and what are you going to do differently to make that happen?  Leave a comment; I’d love to know!
